I was looking to see if a submission I had made to a public inquiry had been acknowledged but found this poem by Hannah instead. Thanks Nick for keeping a record to a great fellow - my dad certainly inspired me (often when I was searching for a way forward over some problem). His memory continues to inspire me, even though I am now officially old.

I've been invited a few times and really have nothing I want to share on it and thus my only reason for joining up would be because a friend asked me to. Which isn't an appealing enough reason. Hope you don't get swallowed by those addictive little micro emotions. :)

Interesting. I had the same reservations, mostly based on an intense dislike of MySpace in my case I think. My experience so far has been very much along the same lines as yours. I'm pleasantly surprised - so much so that I am now feel saddened when I consider the inevitable prospect that sooner or later they will do something to ruin the whole thing.

Well 8km is a great distance to start with.
The secret (that I learned the hard way) is that if you are running longer distances don't try to run fast. Just run so that you are able to talk comfortably as you go and have fun!
See you in the office!

OMG!!! So cool, I sit near you but haven't met you yet ;) I just got started with the whole fitness thing too - I'm starting at ground zero (ie. never been to the gym before) and just did my 8km run last weekend.. clocked in at 63mins which is a bit embarassing :(

I'm doing the Asics 8km one this weekend, so nowhere near a marathon yet (might die)

Hi Nick,

Most interesting discussion. I think your definition of the issue :

"All of these things tie right back to ‘identity’ (as the industry insists on calling it). Who am I? Who are you? And how do we prove it to each other in such a way that it doesn’t get in the way of what we were trying to do in the first place."

is spot on.

Learning it (the problem definition) by heart might keep a researcher (even Bill Gates) properly focused.

This was not really meant to be a sci fi look at the online banking industry. It is more an extension of the effect of what is happening right now. I'll have a think about a post for what Online banking may be like in 3-5 years time.
Thanks for dropping by.

I didn't fill in any details for you but your browser probably did. This is just a helpful feature that Internet explorer and Firefox both use. This is not a sign of spyware.
Use an anti-spyware application. I like the Microsoft one, but I also like the Lavasoft Adaware one too.

Ironically the people who are likely to be worst effected by a fraudulent attack are non-internet bankers. This is because of the possible reaction time between the actual attack and the discovery of the incident. An internet banker may notice a discrepancy the same days while someone who waits for their statements will not find out for a month (if they check them at all).

So despite my belief that the banks can offer more security, knowledge is still the very best defense and access to internet banking helps provide that knowledge.

Nick,
You filled in my details for me, or was it spyware. That was a bit nifty.

I read you discourse with interest. I find the concept of someone looking in on my computer as repugnant. I am sure this is happening as outgoing data volumes are sometimes large relative to what I am doing. But what to do?

That Westpac clause just confirms that online banking is not for me.

Check ‘www.flickr.com/photos/tomc’ for some photos. I need some help with flickr.

Hi Nick Pa calling.
I see the new directions have begun. It is great to see you so envigerated. You are sure going into an area that needs a big rethink and overhaul. The convential banking interface is all but destroyed and nothing of a user orientated nature has taken its place. I know I will still not use the internet for banking transaction as I am not convienvced my banking details are secure. I can also relate some unreal stories about trying to deal with banks these days but I won't do so here.

I do hope they cut you some slack so you can imlpement some real inovations.

Dad and Doreen
